Connecting a remote control to the ceiling fan

Attaching the receiver unit underneath the upper canopy of the ceiling fan requires a little skill and time. The steps are usually the same:

• Firstly, the receiver is inserted into the space within the ceiling mount above the base of the down rod. Remove the decorative canopy before.
• Then connect the cable connection of the receiver with the plug coming from the ceiling mount on one side, and with the plug coming from the ceiling fan on the other side. Take note of the markings on the plugs, they indicate the correct pairing. Some models come without any plugs, in this case simple lustre terminals are used instead. A wiring diagram is included in each ceiling fan or remote control manual.
• Once this step is done, you can place the canopy on top of the ceiling mount and fasten it with the included screws. The canopy hides the mounted and remote receiver.
• Now insert the batteries into the remote handset and turn on the power so the fan can start operating. The transmitter offers several buttons that let you choose all of the different features.
• If you are in the process of adding the remote option to a fan that was previously used with pull cords, make sure the pull cord for the fan is set to “high speed“ and the cord for light is set to “light on“. Do not use the pull cords afterwards, you can even choose to remove the straps if you wish.

The most common frequency of the transmitters is 433 MHz. In order to prevent the fan control from interfering with the other electric devices, it is recommended to change the frequencies of the receiver and handset.

Save heating costs with a ceiling fan

The signal transmission from the remote control to the ceiling fan is done via infrared or radio frequency. More recent models also come with an integral temperature sensor that contribute to save heating costs in the winter and transitional season. Two sensors measure the room temperature on the fan itself and on the remote handset, meaning at different levels. Once the sensors detect a certain difference in temperatures on the ceiling and the floor, the ceiling fan automatically begins operating. Warm indoor air is forced down from the ceiling by the rotation of the blades and then mixes with the colder air on the ground, thus creating a more agreeable indoor temperature in the process.

An efficient heat recovery with a ceiling fan does not necessarily require a remote control with temperature sensors. You can save up to one third of heating costs if you simply let the fan run in reverse on the lowest speed level during the winter (radiator turned on and people present in the room). A digital room thermostat illustrates the change in temperature. A remote control simply adds more convenience and comfort.

Can a ceiling fan with 3 speeds be upgraded with a 4-speed remote control?
Yes, with the remote control (or wall speed controller) the fan receives an additional, fourth speed level.

What can I do to prevent losing the remote?
One option is to store the remote control in a wall-mounted holder bracket next to the door. That way you always know where the appliance is when entering and leaving the room. In case the handset goes missing, we usually offer spares for sale.
